At present, no elastomer can completely replace chloroprene rubber.

Chloroprene rubber has a similar structure to natural rubber. The difference is that the polar negatively charged groups in chloroprene rubber replace the methyl groups in natural rubber, thereby improving the ozone, oil and heat resistance of chloroprene rubber. In short, it has excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, oil resistance, etc. Its comprehensive physical and mechanical properties are also good. The tensile properties of chloroprene rubber are similar to those of natural rubber. Its raw rubber has high tensile strength and elongation at break. It is a self-reinforcing rubber. The molecular structure of chloroprene rubber is regular, and the molecular chain contains polar groups of chlorine atoms, which increases the intermolecular force. Therefore, under the action of external force, it is easy to stretch and crystallize (self-reinforcement), and it is not easy for molecules to slip. In addition, the molecular weight is large (20,000-200,000), so the tensile strength is large.

The chlorine atoms connected to the double bonds of the chlorinated rubber molecular chain make both the double bonds and the chlorine atoms inactive. Therefore, the vulcanized rubber has good fire stability and is not easily affected by heat, oxygen, and light in the atmosphere. It has excellent aging resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance, and heat resistance. Except for strong oxidizing acids, other acids and alkalis have almost no effect on it. The water resistance of chloroprene rubber is also better than other synthetic rubbers.
